Here in north Texas we have a lot of fire ants .
They used to get in my dog food barrel . I sprayed deisel fuel on the outside of the barrel about half way up . I don't understand it but the ants in the barrel even left quickly . No more came in either .
They got in the controls on my well . It seems they like electricity for some reason . I sprayed diesel on and around the controls and they left and didn't come back .
Go inside the barrel and around the feed pan with diesel and they will stay away . Ticks and fleas can't stand diesel either .
I solved the fire ant problem B4 I moved to the City 1and1/2 years ago with Bayer Tree and Shrub with a good %Imacloprid. Provado is what farmers use and it has a higher % Imacloprid. Locate as many mounds as you can find and ram a tally ho stick as deep as it will go and it may go as deep as 3 feet then spray down in the hole also spray it on all of the swarming ants and some of them will go down to the Queen and it wil kill her. You will see a hand ful of dead ants the next day. there will always be a new queen that has already set up shop nearby, so retrace and watch for new little mounds and treat them. My rabbit population tripled in just one year----fire ants kill the young rabbits while they are in the burrows. Hope this helps.
